Increase capacity with 20-30 percent per year

A fossil-free, circular and sustainable society

Scandinavian Biogas contributes to a fossil-free, circular, and sustainable society by producing renewable energy in the form of biogas. Increased production and growth require investments in capacity expansion in new or existing facilities.

Scandinavian Biogas primarily focuses on building production capacity for liquefied biogas. Furthermore, Scandinavian Biogas aims to strengthen and develop its leading market position through investments in continued technological leadership via HOLD Technology™ and an ambitious growth strategy. The strategic growth plan consists of five main areas.

From idea to production

Biokraft has established a growth organization that identifies and evaluates all ideas until a final investment decision (FID) can be made. After the investment decision, the Program Office takes over the responsibility for executing the project until the facility is approved and handed over to operation.

Construction of large-scale biogas plants with liquefaction are complicated and costly projects, and Biokraft has established a multi-step process to minimize misinvestments.

Concept study identifies access to substrate and land. Feasibility study that evaluates feasibility including environmental conditions and access to substrate. If the project meets all the requirements in the feasibility study, a detailed requirement specification and implementation plan for the investment is developed, which is presented to the board for final investment decision and then construction starts.

The process from concept study to final investment decision costs up to SEK 20 million and usually takes 12 to 18 months. Expanding production capacity by 1 GWh costs between SEK 4-6 million including preparatory work.

Skåne's Fagerhult, Sweden

Skåne's Fagerhult is an urban area in the municipality of Örkelljunga in Skåne, located right by the E4 highway. The community is surrounded by beautiful nature, with beech forests situated right next to residential areas.

Convert manure and residual products into biogas

Scandinavian Biogas is planning to build a production facility for liquid biogas (Bio-LNG) in this area. The gas will primarily be generated from manure from local animal husbandry. In addition to manure, other residual products from agriculture and food production will also be utilized.

The production is expected to commence in mid-2025 and will generate approximately 130 GWh, equivalent to the energy content of 13-25 million liters of diesel. The annual CO2 reduction is estimated to be 53,000 tons. Additionally, the facility will produce 200,000 to 400,000 tons of high-quality biogas digestate for the region's agriculture.

Facts

Capacity: 130 GWh (LBG)

Main substrate: Manure

Status: Investment decision by the end of 2023.

Planned production start: Middle of 2025

Government support: Klimatklivet

Mönsterås Översikt Bild

Mönsterås, Sweden

Mönsterås, located in Kalmar County, is one of the country's most densely populated municipalities in terms of livestock. Many farmers in the area are seeking new solutions to enhance and expand their operations in a sustainable manner. Based on this, Scandinavian Biogas and Mönsterås Biogas have signed a collaboration agreement to build and operate a biogas plant that will produce liquid biogas and sanitized biogas digestate by recycling farmers' manure. The parties have formed a joint development company, Mönsterås Biogasproduktion AB, which will be responsible for future production.

Abundant availability of substrate and strong local support

Mönsterås is a fantastic location for this type of project, with ample availability of substrate combined with strong local support and committed partners. The intended customers include major fuel station companies, industrial and maritime actors, as well as larger European energy companies.

The biogas plant will convert manure from cattle, pig, chicken, and egg production in the area into liquid biogas (LBG) and various types of refined biogas digestate. The facility is designed for an annual production of 125 GWh of biogas and approximately 250,000 tons of high-quality biogas digestate in different fractions, both in liquid and solid forms.

Facts

Capacity: 120 GWh (liquid biogas)

Main substrate: Manure

Status: Under construction

Planned production start: Q4 2024

Estimated net investment: 600 million SEK

STOCKHOLM BIO-LNG

Scandinavian Biogas intends to expand and upgrade its facilities in Stockholm.

In Södertörn, the expansion will include an increased gas production capacity and a liquefaction plant. It will be capable of producing both compressed biogas (CBG) and liquid biogas (Bio-LNG).

Efforts are also underway to connect the Södertörn facility to the gas grid in Stockholm, enabling the gas produced in Henriksdal to be transported to Södertörn for conversion into Bio-LNG.

Facts

Planned capacity: 120 GWh (Bio-LNG)

Expected production start: Second half of 2023

Estimated net investment: 200 million SEK
