New European grant to Scandinavian Biogas
3.1 Million Euro to boost biogas production within the Pulp- and Paper Industry, a sector that only in Sweden is capable to generate up to 1 TWh of methane by processing onsite produced wastewater sludge.
With the aim to improve energy efficiency
EffiSlduge for LIFE - An innovative concept to improve resource and energy efficiency in treatment of Pulp and Paper industry effluents - is a project partially funded by the European LIFE programme. The programme is a EU funding instrument for the environment and climate action to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental and climate policy and legislation.
Visualisation of the biogas potential
The main objective of the proposed project is to build and operate the first ever demonstration plant that substantially increases the biogas potential from wastewater generated within the Pulp- and Paper Industry and at the same time lowering the electricity consumption. Granted in 2015, the project is now at its early stage. Scandinavian Biogas is currently looking at the Nordic countries to Identify the optimal hosting mill where implement the EffiSludge concept.
Easy to implement
The project will demonstrate an easy implementation of bio-methane production within the pulp- and paper industry. This will be achieved by modifying the conventional biological wastewater treatment (in most cases an active sludge process) for increased production of waste sludge. The waste sludge from the bio-treatment will be used as a substrate for anaerobic digestion to bio-methane and the production of waste sludge thus optimized for this purpose.
